if the Director is the Admiral of the Fleet, the Assistant Director (AD) is the Captain of the Ship, the Director's Right Hand. without the organization of the AD, the ship and it's crew could potentially flounder, or sink. i find my OCD-like tendencies extremely helpful in this regard!
